Goodwin grew up in Tramore, Co Waterford, on Ireland’s south-east coast, where his father, Bill, worked in a builder’s yard. His parents and two of his three brothers, as well as his little sister Laura, still live in the beach town.
Goodwin started his professional career with Celtic, one of the top clubs in Scotland. However, he didn’t make many appearances for the first team and had loan spells at several clubs, including Stockport County and Scunthorpe United.

He left St Mirren in February 2022 to become manager of Aberdeen, but was fired 11 months later. Goodwin was named manager of Dundee United in March 2023.
