Born to Atz Kilcher and Lenedra Carroll, Jewel’s early years were shaped by the rich experiences of her family, the vast landscapes of Alaska, and the profound influence of music.

At the time of her birth, Atz Kilcher, hailing from Alaska and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was pursuing his studies at Brigham Young University in Utah. The family, including her elder brother Shane, resided in Utah during this period.

However, their path took a different turn after Jewel’s birth as the Kilcher family decided to relocate to Anchorage, Alaska, settling on the family’s expansive 770-acre homestead.

In the rugged terrain of Alaska, Jewel’s younger brother, Atz Jr., joined the family.  Despite the family’s initial church involvement, they ceased attending religious services after Jewel’s parents parted ways when she was eight.

Post the 1981 divorce, Jewel found her home near Homer, Alaska, living with her father. The house she grew up in lacked modern conveniences like indoor plumbing, relying on a simple outhouse.

Jewel’s childhood home lacked the comforts many take for granted, but it became a source of inspiration for her artistry. Recounting those formative years, she expressed, “We lived far from town. We had to walk 2 miles just to get to the saddle barn I was raised in… No running water, no heat—we had a coal stove and an outhouse, and we mainly lived off of what we could kill or can.”

The Kilcher family’s journey, documented on the Discovery Channel show “Alaska: The Last Frontier,” offered glimpses into their daily struggles and triumphs in the Alaskan wilderness.

In the midst of this rugged existence, music played a pivotal role in Jewel’s life. Her father, Atz Kilcher, and she formed a musical duo that performed in roadhouses, taverns, and hotels in Anchorage, such as the Hotel Captain Cook and the Hilton Anchorage. It was during these performances that Jewel learned the art of yodeling from her father, beginning a musical journey that would later lead her to global acclaim.
