Jessie passed away on July 17 after battling cancer.
In 2022, the African National Congress gave Jessie a sick leave and she was away from her political duties for 6 months.
On 24th April, Duarte revealed that she had been battling cancer after the media falsely claimed that she had died, due to being absent from public party events.
