Nadler was born into a Jewish family in Brooklyn. He is the son of Emanuel “Max” Nadler and Miriam. When the younger Nadler was seven years old, his father, a “dyed-in-the-wool Democrat,” lost his chicken farm in New Jersey. The only member of Congress with a yeshiva education, he attended Crown Heights Yeshiva in his teens.
In 1965, he earned his diploma from Stuyvesant High School (where his debate team partner was the future philosopher of science Alexander Rosenberg, and Dick Morris managed his successful campaign for student government president).
At Columbia University, where Nadler earned his B.A. in 1969, he joined the fraternity Alpha Epsilon Pi. Nadler worked as a legal assistant and clerk after graduating from Columbia, first with Corporation Trust Company in 1970 and then with the law firm of Morris, Levin, and Shein in 1971.
