Jerry Hilgenberg Cause of Death

On January 16, 2024, the University of Iowa and the Hawkeye community mourned the loss of a true legend, former All-American Jerry Hilgenberg, who passed away at the age of 92.

Although the announcement of his death left a void in the hearts of many, the cause of Jerry Hilgenberg’s passing remains undisclosed.

Jerry Hilgenberg’s impact on the University of Iowa and its football program was nothing short of monumental. A stellar player, dedicated mentor, and successful businessman, Hilgenberg’s legacy extended far beyond the gridiron.

University of Iowa Moon Family Head Coach Kirk Ferentz, who knew Hilgenberg during the 1980s, described him as a “first-class individual” and expressed condolences to the entire Hilgenberg family.

Hilgenberg held a significant place in Hawkeye history, being the last surviving assistant coach from Iowa’s historic 1958 Big Ten, Rose Bowl, and national championship team. As a player, he started at center for three seasons (1951-53), earning first-team All-American and All-Big Ten honors in his senior year.

His on-field excellence contributed to the Hawkeyes’ final national ranking of No. 9 in 1953, the program’s highest since 1939. Beyond his athletic prowess, Hilgenberg excelled in the classroom, earning Academic All-District and All-Big Ten accolades.

Former Hawkeye quarterback Mike Cilek, who considered Hilgenberg a mentor and partner, reflected on their 50-year friendship. In addition to praising Hilgenberg’s prowess in the real estate business, Cilek emphasized the values he instilled – doing business the right way and carrying lessons learned from athletics throughout life.

Jerry Hilgenberg’s contributions to the University of Iowa earned him a place in the Iowa Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 1995. His impact was not only recognized by the institution but also by being voted onto various all-time Hawkeye teams, including the prestigious Iowa’s All-Century Team in 1989.
