Savo, her younger brother, is eight years her junior. Her family lived in Osijek until June 1991, when they had to leave because of political unrest and wars.
They lived in Sombor, Serbia, for a short time before moving to Australia when Doki was 11 years old. They lived in Fairfield, a Sydney suburb, and she attended Fairfield High School.
She has spoken of growing up in poverty, including living in a rat-infested shed after the family moved from Croatia to Serbia.

Jelena Dokic began her career in the late 1990s and quickly rose to prominence on the international tennis circuit.
Jelena Dokic reached a career-high ranking of No. 4 in the world in 2002 and was regarded as one of the game’s best players at the time.
