Jeanne Modigliani was a talented French painter and art model.
The pages of Jeanne’s life turned dark when Modigliani passed away, leaving her eight months pregnant with their second child.
The weight of grief proved too much to bear, leading Jeanne to a devastating decision. The day after Modigliani’s death, she threw herself from the fifth-floor apartment window, a tragic act that claimed both her own life and that of her unborn son.
Jeanne’s artistic journey began in Montparnasse, where her brother André Hébuterne, fueled by a passion for painting, introduced her to the bohemian artistic community.

Amidst the then-starving artists, Jeanne found herself modeling for Tsuguharu Foujita, weaving her own narrative into the canvas of their collective struggle.
Despite her artistic pursuits, Jeanne’s life took a somber turn. Her family, grappling with grief and pointing fingers at Modigliani, laid her to rest in the Cimetière de Bagneux. It was a burial ground for dreams and love cut short.
A decade later, a poignant request from Modigliani’s brother, Emanuele, led to a poignant reunion. The Hébuterne family agreed to transfer Jeanne’s remains to Père Lachaise Cemetery, where she found her final resting place beside Modigliani.
The epitaph on her tombstone reads: “Devoted companion to the extreme sacrifice.”
