- Nina Hart Gary: A Tragic Tale of Loss
During the filming of “Macho Callahan” in Durango, Mexico, Seberg found herself entangled in a romance with Carlos Ornelas Navarra, a student revolutionary. In the winter of 1969–70, Seberg gave birth to their daughter, Nina Hart Gary, on August 23, 1970. Tragically, the newborn’s life was cut short just two days later on August 25, 1970. The cause of death was linked to complications arising from Seberg’s overdose on sleeping pills during her pregnancy. While ex-husband Gary officially assumed responsibility, Seberg openly acknowledged Ornelas as Nina’s father. Nina now rests at Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown.
Despite the controversies that surrounded Seberg’s life, her children became enduring symbols of her complex journey through motherhood. The hidden aspects of their births and the subsequent tragedies reflect Seberg’s attempt to shield her family from the intense scrutiny that defined her public life.
