The world of wood chopping has lost one of its most iconic figures with the passing of Jason Wynyard MNZM. The Te Awamutu-born Kiwi wood-chopping legend, who claimed over a hundred world titles in his illustrious career, succumbed to a relentless battle with an aggressive form of cancer. He was 49 years old.

Jason’s journey in wood chopping began at a tender age, inspired by his late father Pae Wynyard, who himself was a highly accomplished axeman. This early introduction to the sport would set the stage for an extraordinary career that would make him a household name in New Zealand and around the world.

Wynyard’s achievements in wood chopping are unparalleled. He clinched the individual world championship an astounding nine times, a testament to his exceptional skill, dedication, and unwavering commitment to his craft. In addition to his world championships, he also secured the prestigious Stihl Timbersports Series title an incredible 14 times.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the sport, Jason Wynyard was honored with the distinction of becoming a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) as part of the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list in 2017. His legacy in wood chopping extends far beyond mere titles and accolades; it represents the epitome of excellence in timber sports.

Despite his remarkable success, Wynyard remained humble, down-to-earth, and a beloved figure among fans and competitors alike. His sportsmanship and character were as admired as his wood-chopping prowess, serving as an inspiration to all who had the privilege of witnessing his feats.

Jason Wynyard’s battle with stage four Burkitt lymphoma, an aggressive and rare form of cancer affecting the lymphatic system, was met with courage and determination. He underwent three cycles of chemotherapy, displaying the same resilience that defined his wood-chopping career. However, the cancer proved far too aggressive for treatment, and it continued to spread.

On October 4th, 2023, Jason Wynyard’s battle came to an end, but his legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and admired him. He leaves behind a remarkable story of triumph, an enduring love for the sport, and a legacy of greatness that will forever define the world of wood chopping.

As we remember and honor Jason Wynyard, we also extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the wood chopping community. His impact on the sport and the lives he touched will be celebrated and cherished for generations to come.
