Janet Yellen’s husband is George Akerlof. George has been married to Janet Yellen for more than four decades. Akerlof and Yellen’s love story began in a cafeteria at the Federal Reserve in 1977.

Akerlof, like his wife, is a well-known economics expert. In 2001, he was awarded the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences.
In 2001, he shared the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences with Michael Spence and Joseph Stiglitz. His 1970 study, “The Market for ‘Lemons,’” which “for the first time described the role of asymmetric knowledge in creating market perversity,” was cited by the Nobel Committee.

After receiving a bachelor’s degree in economics from Yale in 1962. Akerlof attended graduate school at MIT. He received his Doctorate in 1966 and went on to work as an assistant professor at the University of California, Berkeley.
Akerlof is currently a professor at Georgetown University McCourt School of Public Policy and the Koshland Professor of Economics Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley.
