Van Hecke was born in Arnemuiden and was a VV Goes youth product until signing for NAC Breda in 2018. On August 16, 2019, he made his professional debut with NAC Breda in a 5-1 Eerste Divisie victory over Helmond Sport.

Van Hecke signed a three-year contract with Premier League team Brighton & Hove Albion on September 10, 2020.
He returned to the Netherlands on September 18, 2020, to spend the whole 2020–21 season on loan with Heerenveen of the Eredivisie.
On September 19, 2020, Heeerenveen defeated Fortuna Sittard 3-1 in the Eredivisie to mark his team’s debut.

He signed a loan agreement with Blackburn Rovers of the Championship on August 29, 2021, to play for them in 2021–2022. On October 16, he made his debut, appearing in the whole 2-2 home tie with Coventry City.
On his seventh game, with Rovers down 2-0 in an eventual 7-0 drubbing at home to Fulham, he was sent for a careless challenge on Harry Wilson.
