James Spader on Clark Middleton death: What did James Spader say?

The first step in Clark Middleton’s acting career was taking a $15 acting class at a junior college in California with his pals. He moved to New York City to pursue acting as a career after participating in theater in Los Angeles. He developed his abilities there at the Herbert Berghof Studio under Geraldine Page’s guidance.

His first appearance in a motion picture was in the 1983 television film Miss Lonelyhearts. Middleton composed and performed Miracle Mile, a one-man show in 1997 that detailed his lifetime struggle with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. The play was performed in New York City and other cities across the country.

In the 1990s, Middleton attained recurrent parts in well-known shows including Law & Order, where he played the forensic technician Ellis. In the science fiction series Fringe, he also portrayed the recurring Edward Markham, a rare book trader.

However, Glen Carter, a DMV employee who doubled as a tracker in The Blacklist, was Middleton’s most well-known character. He joined the cast of the Showtime Network television show Twin Peaks: The Return in 2017 and played Charlie, Audrey Horne’s husband.

In July 2020, Middleton gave his final performance, which was conducted remotely through Zoom, in which he portrayed a worn-out night clerk at a hotel in Times Square in Eugene O’Neill’s one-act play Hughie.

“He inhabits the whole world, he really does. He lives in it and he really loves it. And he loves life,” says Spader, a three-time Emmy winner.
