James Norton completed work experience at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough when he was 15 years old. Norton then attended Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, where he studied theology and graduated with First Class Honours in 2007.

James Norton attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London for three years but left in 2010 before graduating to take an acting assignment. He was a member of the original cast of Posh at the Royal Court Theatre in 2010.
