James Geoffrey Franklin is an American football coach and former player. James and his wife Fumi Franklin have two daughters Shola and Addison Franklin.

Their daughter, Addison, suffers from sickle cell disease, a condition which compromises a person’s immune system.
Franklin revealed in an interview with Penlive.com in 2014 that he and his wife found out their daughter had the disease shortly after she was born.

Franklin also said his family will try to do some things in the future with regard to fundraising and education about the disease.

“We talked today about possibly getting my wife involved in, and fundraising at the hospital or starting a foundation. That’s something that we’ve talked about doing.
“I just want to get my family here first, kinda sort through all of this. But it was a big factor in us coming to Penn State, making sure that we were going to be able to get the right type of care for our daughter.”
