James was a member of the Democratic Party.

James supported and actively campaigned for Ret. Gen. Wesley K. Clark during the 2004 Democratic primary race. He also backed Hillary Clinton as the Democratic candidate for president.

He doubled as a professor at Rutgers University’s Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy before he passed away.

James died on September 25, 2022, from an unknown cause. His cause of death was not disclosed.
