James Joseph Florio was an American Democratic politician who served as the 49th governor of New Jersey from 1990 to 1994, the first American of Italian descent to hold the position. He served as a member of the United States House of Representatives for 15 years between 1975 and 1990.

The cause of James death was complications of a heart attack, said Maurie Perl, a spokeswoman for Condé Nast. For 10 years, until 2004, Mr. Florio led Condé Nast, the magazine division of Advance Publications, the parent company owned by the Newhouse family.
