James Duckworth was born on January 21, 1992, in Sydney, Australia. He is the son of David Duckworth. He attended Sydney Church of England Grammar School, where he played tennis first team.
James Duckworth was then offered a scholarship to the Australian Institute of Sport. He played his first ITF under-18 tournament in December 2005 when he was 13 years old. As a junior, he won three titles and reached the semi-finals of the 2010 French Open.
James Duckworth represented Australia in tennis at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2022 ATP Cup. He entered his first professional tournament in September 2006 as a 14-year-old in Happy Valley, South Australia, however, he lost in the first round. He made his top 150 debut on 12 August 2013.
James Duckworth reached the top 50 in the singles rankings at World No. 47 on 8 November for the first time in his career. He has a career-high Association of Tennis Professionals singles ranking of World No. 47 as well as No. 185 in doubles achieved on 10 February 2020.
