Jalen Tyrese Johnson was born on December 18, 2001, in Wausau, Wisconsin, United States of America. As a high school freshman in 2016–17, Johnson averaged 15.2 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.1 blocks to help his team to a 20–4 record.

As a high school sophomore in 2017–18, Jalen Johnson averaged 18.4 points, 9.6 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 1.9 steals, and 1.5 blocks to help his team to a 25–2 record.

Jalen Johnson was named the Associated Press Player of the Year for Wisconsin. In 2019, Johnson transferred to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida for his senior year.
Jalen Johnson was rated as a five-star recruit and the No.13 overall recruit in the 2020 high school class. Johnson played college basketball for the Duke Blue Devils at Duke University.
In his first game with the Duke Blue Devils, Johnson had 19 points and 19 rebounds against Coppin State.
