In addition to his incomplete opera The Tales of Hoffmann, he is most known for his nearly 100 operettas from the 1850s through the 1870s.
Fastidious critics—dubbed “Musical Snobs Ltd” by Gammond—proved to be opposed to widespread public acclaim both during Offenbach’s lifetime and in the obituary remarks in 1880.
George Hauger made a comment in a piece published in The Musical Times in 1980 about how those critics not only undervalued Offenbach but also believed his music would soon be forgotten.

Jacques Offenbach Parents: Who Were Isaac Juda Offenbach & Marianne Offenbach?
He was the second son and the seventh of ten children of Isaac Juda Offenbach né Eberst and his wife Marianne, née Rindskopf.
Issac Juda had left his native Offenbach am Main around 1800 for Cologne, where he became known as “Offenbach,” a name he adopted as his surname in 1808.
