McKinney was biking to meet Westhead on November 8, 1979, when his bicycle’s gears locked up as he approached a stop sign. His head collided with the concrete, resulting in a concussion and a three-day coma. McKinney died in 2018 at the age of 83, and his daughter stated that his death was caused by complications from his brain injury.

John Paul McKinney was a college and professional basketball coach in the United States. He introduced an up-tempo style of play known as Showtime while coaching the Los Angeles Lakers in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

His only season with the Lakers, however, was cut short due to a bicycle accident. In 1981, McKinney was named NBA Coach of the Year after joining the Indiana Pacers. He also served as a coach for the Kansas City Kings (now known as the Sacramento Kings). He also worked as an assistant coach for the Milwaukee Bucks and Portland Trail Blazers.
