John Peter Rhys Williams MBE FRCS, a luminary of Welsh rugby during its Golden Era in the 1970s, breathed his last on January 8, 2024.

His passing, at the age of 74, marked the end of an era as the rugby community mourned the loss of a true icon. Williams succumbed to bacterial meningitis at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.
J.P.R. Williams, often referred to simply as “JPR,” etched his name in rugby history through his exceptional contributions to Wales, the British and Irish Lions, and renowned clubs like London Welsh, Bridgend, and the Barbarians.
The former full-back, synonymous with the glories of Welsh and Lions rugby in the 1970s, had an illustrious career as both player and captain. His leadership and prowess on the field earned him 55 caps for Wales, a testament to his enduring impact on the international stage.
Williams played a crucial role in the historic Lions tours to New Zealand in 1971 and South Africa in 1974, contributing significantly to the team’s success with a total of eight Test caps.

The Williams family released a statement conveying the sad news of J.P.R.’s passing: “JPR died peacefully today at the University Hospital of Wales surrounded by his loving wife and four children, after a short illness, bravely battling bacterial meningitis. The family request privacy at this difficult time.”
His remarkable career was highlighted by three Five Nations Grand Slams in 1971, 1976, and 1978. Though he stepped away from international rugby in 1981, Williams continued to make occasional appearances on the rugby field before ultimately retiring in 2003.
The British and Irish Lions paid tribute to J.P.R. Williams, acknowledging him as “one of the greatest ever” to wear their iconic shirt—a man whose legacy inspired generations of rugby enthusiasts.
