JP McManus began his business career in his family’s construction plant. Soon after, he found his calling as an on-course bookmaker at Limerick’s greyhound racecourse, the Market’s Field.

He and his wife, Noreen, purchased Martinstown Stud on over 400 acres in County Limerick in 1982 and his first horse, “Cill Dara.”  He went on to build the empire he has today, which includes 400 horses in training. McManus’ first victory came with a horse named “Mister Donovan” at Cheltenham.

Aside from his work as a racehorse owner, McManus’ wealth has come from his work as a private foreign exchange trader, which he manages from a small office in Geneva, Switzerland.

He built a €20 million home next to Martinstown Stud in 2006. He finished a €150 million home in Barbados in 2013.

McManus has a history of donating multiple times. McManus donated over €1 million to the Daughters of Charity Foundation in July 2012. During the 2019-22 Coronavirus pandemic, he donated equipment to the University Hospital, Dooradoyle, in 2020.
