Issey Miyake Obituary

Issey Miyake was a Japanese designer famous for his pleated style of clothing that never wrinkles. Issey Miyake died on August 5 of liver cancer, according to the Kyodo news agency. He was 84.

Miyake was born in Hiroshima and was seven years old when the atomic bomb was dropped on the city while he was in a classroom.

He studied graphic design at a Japanese art university before moving to Paris in the 1960s to work with renowned fashion designers Guy Laroche and Hubert de Givenchy.

He briefly lived in New York before returning to Tokyo in 1970 to establish the Miyake Design Studio.

Issey Miyake was a global fashion designer known for his innovative styles and perfume. He designed Steve Jobs’ famous black turtle neck jumpers.

Throughout his long career, Miyake was known to use both traditional and modern fashion techniques.

In 2006, he received the prestigious Kyoto Prize for his dedication to the arts, and in 2010, he was awarded the Order of Culture for “remarkable accomplishments” in Japanese culture and arts.
