Despite the challenges associated with hearing loss, Hanfmann’s journey in tennis has been marked by resilience, determination, and a perspective that turns adversities into strengths.

Originally a junior football player representing his local club in Karlsruhe, Hanfmann made the difficult decision to step away from the game due to the challenges posed by his hearing impairment.

The auditory experiences on the football field became increasingly challenging, prompting him to shift his focus to a sport where visual cues played a more prominent role—tennis.

In an interview with SID news agency, a subsidiary of AFP, Hanfmann reflected on his transition from football to tennis, stating, “At some point, I stopped hearing my teammates shouting and the coaches’ commands. It is completely different in tennis, where I see my opponents. That simplifies the whole thing.”

Speaking about the impact of his hearing disability, Hanfmann shared insights into his ability to concentrate in a noisy environment. “For me, everything is like a noise except when there is a lot of shouting. I don’t hear what is said around the court and I take that as an advantage,” he explained.

Hanfmann’s approach to tennis and life highlights the transformative power of overcoming obstacles. Rather than viewing his hearing impairment as a hindrance, he embraced it as a unique advantage, especially in the realm of professional tennis. His ability to remain focused amidst the noise of a packed stadium showcases his adaptability and resilience.
