The 16-member Veterans Committee unanimously voted him to the Hall of Fame on December 9, 2013. The induction ceremony took place on July 27, 2014, in Cooperstown, New York. He was inducted into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame Museum on August 16, 2014.

From 1963 to the present, he has played in the Major Leagues in a variety of roles. He managed the St. Louis Cardinals and the Oakland Athletics in the past.

La Russa debuted in the major leagues in 1963 and played for the Kansas City / Oakland Athletics, Atlanta Braves, and Chicago Cubs for five seasons. He spent most of his career in the lower leagues after suffering a shoulder injury during the 1964–65 off-season. He retired in 1977. He graduated from Florida State University with a Juris Doctor degree after his playing career.
