The novel is based on the true story of two men with the same name who, despite living just a few blocks apart in Baltimore, ended up in very different locations.
Author Moore went on to become a Rhodes Scholar, Army Officer, White House Fellow, and the CEO of Robin Hood, a significant anti-poverty organisation based in New York.
The Other Wes Moore was born in 1975 and grew up in Baltimore in the 1980s. Moore, whose father had abandoned him, was a drug dealer.

The other Wes Moore tried to avoid a life of crime like his father, but on February 7, 2000, he robbed a jewellery store as part of a scheme with his brother and two other men.
During the escape, his brother shot and killed Sergeant Bruce A. Prothero. All four were found guilty of crimes related to the incident.
The Other Wes Moore is currently incarcerated for the rest of his life after taking part in a robbery during which an off-duty police officer was killed.
It is a tale that demonstrates the crucial roles that family support and societal intervention play in influencing the lives of young men in inner cities.
