He spent several years there playing minor hockey, but following an unsuccessful tryout for the Quebec AAA roster, he spent a year in the Saskatchewan AAA league. Couturier was selected in the second round of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) draft by the Drummondville Voltigeurs following his league championship with Saskatchewan.
