Scott Lloyd Benton, Member of Parliament for Blackpool South, is grappling with a 35-day suspension from parliamentary duties, adding another layer of complexity to an already challenging political landscape for Chancellor Rishi Sunak.

The controversy emerged when The Times newspaper, in April 2023, published an exposé revealing Benton’s alleged willingness to lobby government officials on behalf of the gambling industry and leak a confidential policy document for a reported monthly fee of £4,000. The newspaper documented Benton engaging with what turned out to be fake gambling industry investors.

Benton, who was also the chairman of the All-party parliamentary group on betting and gaming at the time, referred himself to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards in response to the allegations. This led to an investigation initiated in the same month, accompanied by the suspension of Benton’s parliamentary whip pending the outcome.

The Office of the Registrar of Consultant Lobbyists, established in 2014 to oversee political lobbying activities, concluded that Benton had not engaged in “unregistered consultant lobbying activity” on behalf of the gambling industry. This determination was based on the assurances provided during the investigation.

However, in a turn of events in December 2023, the Commons Standards Committee released a report deeming Benton’s interactions with The Times as a “very serious breach” of lobbying rules. The committee asserted that Benton had conveyed a message of corruption and a willingness to be ‘for sale,’ insinuating that such behavior might extend to other Members of the House.

As a consequence, the committee recommended a 35-day suspension from Parliament for Scott Benton. The suspension not only poses a personal setback for Benton but also raises political challenges, potentially triggering a byelection in Blackpool South. With Rishi Sunak already facing a series of difficulties, Benton’s suspension adds further pressure to the political landscape.
