Sir Samuel Alexander Mendes CBE is a British director, producer, and screenwriter who has worked in both film and theatre. He is not related to actress Eva Mendes.

He made his directorial debut with the drama American Beauty (1999), for which he won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Director.
Since then, he has directed the crime flicks Road to Perdition (2002), Jarhead (2005), Revolutionary Road (2008), Skyfall (2012) and Spectre (2012), as well as the James Bond blockbusters Skyfall and Spectre (2015).

He won the BAFTA Award for Best Direction and a second Golden Globe Award for Best Director for the war picture 1917 (2019), as well as his second Academy Award nomination for Best Director; he was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.
Mendes was appointed CBE in 2000 for his contributions to drama, and he was knighted in the 2020 New Year’s Honours List.
In the same year, the Alfred Toepfer Foundation in Hamburg, Germany, awarded him the Shakespeare Prize.
