Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, and the conflict is still ongoing. It began in February 2014, following the Ukrainian Revolution of Dignity, and was initially focused on the status of Crimea and parts of the Donbas, both of which are internationally recognized as being part of Ukraine.

The Russian annexation of Crimea (2014) and the war in Donbas (2014–present) between Ukraine and Russian-backed separatists, as well as naval incidents, cyberwarfare, and political tensions, characterized the first eight years of the conflict.

Following a Russian military buildup on the Russia–Ukraine border beginning in late 2021, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

How much of Ukraine is under Russian control?

As of 2019, the government considers 7% of Ukraine’s territory to be occupied. On December 17, 2018, the United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution A/73/L.47, which declared Crimea to be under “temporary occupation.”
