If you are a fan of Roald Dahl’s books or the previous adaptations of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, you might enjoy Wonka, a prequel musical that tells the origin story of the eccentric candy-maker Willy Wonka.

The film stars Timothee Chalamet as the young Wonka, who embarks on a series of adventures with his friend Noodle, played by Calah Lane. The film is directed by Paul King, who also helmed the critically acclaimed Paddington movies.

According to the reviews, Wonka is a “warmly old-fashioned” film that “puts a suitably sweet spin on the classic character while still leaving some room for the source material’s darker undertones”. The film features “solid new songs”, “breezy two-hour musical comedy”, and “performances, costumes, songs, and choreography [that] are probably better than they needed to be to make a hit of this project”.

The film also has some “satirical or metaphorical touches” and “self-referential jokes and outrageous puns” that add some flavor to the candy-themed story. However, not everyone is impressed by Wonka. Some critics have found the film to be “formulaic”, “overstuffed”, and “lacking in magic” .
Some have also questioned the necessity of making a prequel that explores Wonka’s backstory, which was not a major focus of Dahl’s books or the previous films. Some have also compared the film unfavorably to the 1971 version starring Gene Wilder, which is considered by many to be a classic.
