Catcher for the Major League Baseball Houston Astros, Martin Benjamin Maldonado Valdés, is of Puerto Rican descent. In the 27th round of the 2004 Major League Baseball draft, the Anaheim Angels selected Maldonado. For the rookie-level Arizona League Angels that year, he played his first professional season, batting.217/.277/.233.

He played for Arizona once more in 2005 in addition to the Orem Owlz, a rookie team. He spent one more season with the Arizona Angels in 2006, batting.222/.329/.270 before being dismissed. In 2007, Maldonado played for the West Virginia Power in the Single-A South Atlantic League, batting.223/.309/.288 on a minor league deal with the Milwaukee Brewers.
