Grey, who was born on April 11, 1932, is best known for his role as the Master of Ceremonies in the Broadway musical Cabaret as well as the 1972 film adaptation directed by Bob Fosse. He has received several awards, including an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Tony Award.

Grey began his career at age 10, in the early 1940s at the Cleveland Play House’s Curtain Pullers children’s theatre program, where he appeared in productions such as Grandma Slyboots, Jack of Tarts, and a starring role in On Borrowed Time.

At the age of 20, he began performing as a featured artist at New York’s Copacabana nightclub.

He changed his surname from Katz to Grey early in his career to avoid the stigma of having a surname with an identifiable ethnicity.

What happened to Joel Grey?

He received the Lifetime Achievement Tony Award in June 2023.

John Kander, 96, won the same recognition.

Grey and Kander were declared the victors, and they were joined on stage by Ariana DeBose and Julianne Hough, who hosted the show.

Nevertheless, as soon as they emerged, they were clumsily hurried away without being allowed to say anything.

As a result, Tony Award organizers were chastised for not allowing Joel Grey and John Kander to give acceptance remarks.
