The 21st governor-general of Australia, William Hayden (23 January 1933 – 21 October 2023) was an Australian politician who presided over the country from 1989 to 1996. He held the positions of Labor Party Leader and Leader of the Opposition from 1977 to 1983, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade under Bob Hawke from 1983 to 1988, and Treasurer of Australia in 1975 under Gough Whitlam.

He graduated from Brisbane State High School, joined the Queensland Police, and spent eight years working as a police officer while taking part-time economics classes at the University of Queensland. Along with Manfred Cross and Doug McClelland, Hayden was the youngest member of Labor still alive at the time of his death. Hayden was elected to the House of Representatives in the federal election of 1961 at the age of 28.
