Canceling a Planet Fitness membership can be a bit more involved than you might expect. While Planet Fitness is a popular chain of fitness centers, their cancellation process isn’t as straightforward as some other gyms. Here’s what you need to know:

1. In-Person or Written Notification: To cancel your membership, you have two official options: visiting your home club in person or sending a letter via the postal service. Unfortunately, Planet Fitness doesn’t allow you to cancel your membership by phone or online. You’ll need to take that extra step to either visit your gym or write a letter.

2. Cancellation Form: If you choose to cancel in person, visit your home club’s front desk and request a cancellation form. This form will help you initiate the cancellation process.
3. Written Letter: If you prefer to cancel via mail, write a letter that explains your intent to cancel your membership. Include your name, address, phone number, and Planet ID membership number. Address it to your home club and consider sending it via certified mail for confirmation.

4. Billing Changes: Keep in mind that if you want to stop the billing of your monthly membership, the club must receive written notice delivered by the 10th of the month (in person or through mail). Billing changes may take up to 7 business days to take effect.
5. Annual Fee: To stop the billing of the annual fee, cancellation must be completed by the 25th of the month prior to the annual fee date.
6. Minimum Term and Buyout Fee: If your membership has a minimum term and is canceled before the end of the contract term, a $58 buyout fee is required.
7. Membership Hold: If you don’t need to cancel completely but want to step away temporarily, some clubs allow you to put your membership on hold for up to three months for medical reasons. The rules for this vary from club to club, so reach out to customer service at your specific location.
8. Transfer: If you want to transfer your membership to a different Planet Fitness club, you can do so online if you meet certain eligibility criteria (e.g., not being a minor, having been a member for at least 90 days, etc.).
Remember that each club is independently owned as part of Planet Fitness’s franchise model. So if you have any questions or concerns related to billing or membership, it’s best to contact your home club directly. They’ll be able to provide personalized assistance based on their specific policies.
