He was a student at the Belfast Royal Academy, where he participated in the first XV and reached the 2010 Ulster Schools Cup final. He was chosen to play for the Ulster/Leinster team in the exhibition match against Connacht/Munster in July 2010 at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

Iain received his first professional contract in October 2012 after making his debut for the senior Ulster team in April 2012. At both the U19 and U20 levels, including the 2012 U20 World Championships, he competed for Ireland. In Dublin’s loss to South Africa in November 2012, he made his senior Ireland debut.
