Although the cause of this illness is yet to be determined, its symptoms include “a sudden hearing of loud noise, pain in one or both ears, feeling of pressure or vibrations in the head, tinnitus, visual problems, vertigo, nausea, and cognitive difficulties.”

A committee of experts from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, have opined that microwave energy “seems to be the most plausible mechanism in explaining these cases, even though each possible cause remains speculative”.

Ultrasound, pesticides, or mass psychogenic illness, have been listed as likely causes.

The US authorities have also reported that it is “very unlikely” that the mysterious illness is as a result of a hostile foreign power.
