Hari Chand, a former India long-distance runner, passed away on Monday, June 13, 2022, morning at the age of 69. His cause of death was undisclosed.

Khajan Singh, Asian Games medallist swimmer, said Hari Chand’s death was a great loss for Indian sport.
“This is a huge loss for Indian sports.” He was my superior in the CRPF. He was both competitive and straightforward. He used to go around grooming players. I learned a great deal from him. “He was like a guiding light to many of us,”

Chand competed in two Olympics and won two gold medals at the 1978 Bangkok Asian Games. He has won the 5000m and 10000m races at the Bangkok Asiad.
He also achieved a national record for the 25-lapper in the 1976 Olympics, which remained for 32 years. He finished seventh in the second heat of the 10,000-meter race at Montreal in 1976, clocking a time of 28:48.72. This had been a national record for 32 years until Surendra Singh broke it.
Chand was one of the greatest long-distance runners India has ever produced.
