Groundhog Day is not a national holiday in the United States, meaning it is not a day off for the general population. It is, however, widely recognized and celebrated in certain regions, especially in the northeastern and central parts of the United States and parts of Canada.

Groundhog Day is a popular tradition in the United States and Canada, where people wait for a groundhog to emerge from its burrow and predict the weather for the next six weeks. According to legend, if the groundhog sees its shadow, it means six more weeks of winter. If not, it means an early spring.

The first official Groundhog Day event took place in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, in 1887. The celebration is now well over a century old, making it more than 130 years old as of 2024.

The tradition itself, as mentioned earlier, has its roots in ancient European customs associated with the midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. The modern celebration with a groundhog as a weather predictor emerged through the adaptation of these traditions by German settlers in the United States.
