The allegations, first reported by Newstalk ZB Plus on January 10, 2024, claim that Ghahraman was accused of shoplifting during the festive season from Scotties Boutique, a luxury brands store in Ponsonby.
The human rights lawyer, who has been a key figure within the Green Party, served as the spokesperson for justice, trade, and foreign affairs, among other topics. However, in light of the allegations, Ghahraman has voluntarily stood down from these roles, pending an internal investigation by the Green Party.
A spokesperson for the Green Party addressed the matter, stating, “The Green party is aware of allegations regarding MP Golriz Ghahraman and is in contact with Scotties Boutique to better understand and address them.
Green MPs are expected to maintain high standards of public behavior. Ms. Ghahraman will stand aside from all portfolio responsibilities until the matter is resolved. The Green party and Ms. Ghahraman will not comment further at this time.”

Golriz Ghahraman has not publicly addressed the allegations, and Scotties Boutique has declined to comment on the matter. The incident was reported to the police on December 23, 2023, and authorities confirmed receiving the report.
However, they have not specified whether specific individuals are under investigation for the alleged shoplifting incidents.
Golriz Ghahraman, who made history in 2017 by becoming the first refugee elected to the New Zealand Parliament, sought asylum from Iran after the Iran-Iraq war.
The shoplifting allegations mark a significant development in her political career, and the Green Party’s internal investigation will play a crucial role in determining the outcome of this challenging situation. As the story unfolds, the public awaits further updates on the investigation and its impact on Ghahraman’s political future.
