After graduating from high school, he immediately enrolled in the University of Maine, where he played for four years while three years in a row, leading the NCAA in victories.

He was selected for the All-Tournament team in 1993 after guiding the team to a 42-1-2 record and the NCAA Championship. He spent the majority of 1993–94 competing for the United States national team, which included competing in the 1994 Winter Olympics.
