Former Mayor Koch is not alive. Following the end of his mayoralty, Koch experienced some health issues, including heart problems, and he was hospitalised frequently in the final months of his life.

On January 31, 2013, he was admitted to Columbia University Irving Medical Center in Manhattan due to exhaustion. He died of heart failure the next morning at 2 a.m. EST, at the age of 88. On February 4, 2013, his funeral was held at Temple Emanu-El, a Reform Jewish congregation in Manhattan.

Ed Koch is buried in Manhattan New York. In April 2008, Koch purchased a burial plot in Trinity Church Cemetery so that he could be buried in Manhattan. It is the borough’s only graveyard that accepts new burials. On his tombstone, he chose to inscribe the final words of the late journalist Daniel Pearl: “My father is Jewish, my mother is Jewish, and I am Jewish.”
Edward Irving Koch was a politician, lawyer, political commentator, film critic, and television personality from the United States. From 1969 to 1977, he was a member of the United States House of Representatives.
