He is recognised as one of the greatest fielders of all time and is among the best all-format batsmen of his era.

Du Plessis is a right-handed batsman and a right-arm leg-break bowler. He plays in the middle order and his major role in his team is that of a middle-order batsman.

He is one of the most successful International captains of his era with a winning percentage of 73.68 in ODIs.

Faf du Plessis holds various international records such as; being the second batsman to have scored a century as a captain in all three formats of the game ( Test, 12 occasions in One Day Internationals (ODIs) and once in Twenty20 Internationals); the second highest individual score by a South African cricketer with 185 runs; the captain to declare innings at the lowest ever total of 259/9 and also holds the record for playing the most innings before scoring a duck in international cricket (108).
