Fonseca Carrillo was active in the drug trade in the 1970s and 1980s, and he played a key role in the rise of the Guadalajara cartel. He was arrested in Mexico in 1978 and sentenced to 40 years in prison.
However, Fonseca was transferred from prison to house arrest in July 2016, because of his old age and declining health, with about nine years remaining on his 40-year sentence.

It is believed that he retired from the drug trade after his release and has not been publicly active in the years since.
There have been rumours and reports over the years suggesting that Fonseca Carrillo has died, but there has been no official confirmation of his death.
It is possible that he is still alive and living in relative obscurity, but this cannot be confirmed at this time.
