Endometriosis is a chronic and often painful disorder where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows outside of the uterus, usually in the pelvic region.

Endometriosis causes a chronic inflammatory reaction that may result in the formation of scar tissue (adhesions, fibrosis) within the pelvis and other parts of the body. Endometriosis can cause infertility.

Endometriosis is sometimes mistaken for other conditions that can cause pelvic pain, such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), ovarian cysts or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

The exact cause of endometriosis is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors. As of now, there is no known way to prevent endometriosis.
