Ed Hackbarth and David Jameson opened the first Del Taco in Yermo, CA in 1964. With a menu of 19¢ tacos, tostadas, fries, and 24¢ cheeseburgers, Del Taco brought in $169 in sales on its first day in business – the equivalent of 900 tacos. Things were off to a bold start.

Del Taco thrived during the 1970s. By 1977 there were 50 restaurants and by 1978 there were 100. The menu also grew, expanding to include items like the bun taco, quesadilla, and ice cream sundaes.

Today, by introducing The Del Taco, the Buck & Under Menu, and even more fresh ingredients like sliced avocado, Del Taco continues to be the leader in serving fresh, quality food for a value price. We take pride in chopping, grilling, and shredding in our restaurants every day.

Is Del Taco Better Than Taco Bell?

Taco Bell is the Goliath of the pair, with roughly 6,600 locations around the world. Meanwhile, Del Taco has just 550 locations in 15 states.

Despite Taco Bell’s power in numbers, Del Taco is considered better as it has a cult following on the West Coast who promise the smaller chain more than makes up for its size in the strength of flavor.

In terms of pricing too, Del Taco prices tend to be slightly cheaper than Taco Bell prices when you compare single items like regular tacos. For instance, a regular taco from Del Taco is on the Buck and Under menu and is just $.69, but the same order at Taco Bell is $1.19.
