Born on November 22, 1989, in England, Smalling began playing for the Millwall academy, Walderslade Boys and Lordswood, as a teenager, before joining the non-League club Maidstone United.

Afterwards, he played for Middlesbrough and got signed by the Premier League club Fulham in 2008, where he helped the club reach the 2010 UEFA Europa League Finals.
In the same year, Manchester United signed in Smalling who went on to make “over 300 appearances for the club, and won two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, a League Cup, a UEFA Europa League and two Community Shields.”
Internationally, Smalling has played with the England national team, from the under-18 team to the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and UEFA Euro 2016.
In 2019, Smalling was signed in by the Serie A club Roma for a fee of €3 million, and in 2022, Smalling was awarded Man of the Match at the UEFA Europa Conference League Final.
