The Great Gama, Ghulam Mohammad Baksh Butt, was a pehlwani wrestler in British India. He was the world’s undefeated wrestler in the early twentieth century.

Gama rose to prominence in 1895, when he battled then-Indian Wrestling Champion, middle-aged Raheem Bakhsh Sultani Wala, another ethnic Kashmiri wrestler from Gujranwala, Punjab Province, Colonial India, at the age of 17.

Gama’s career was transformed by his match with Raheem. Following that, he was regarded as the next contender for the Rustam-e-Hind or Indian Wrestling Championship. Gama won the opening round. By 1910, Gama had defeated every famous Indian wrestler he had fought.

Lee read articles about Gama and how he used his routines to develop his famed wrestling strength, and he instantly adapted them into his regimen. Lee’s workout routines included “the cat stretch” and “the squat” (known as “baithak”, and also known as the “deep-knee bend.”).
