It appears that Baker Mayfield’s time with the Cleveland Browns is coming to an end.

According to ESPN, the 26-year-old quarterback has requested to be traded ahead of the season. Mayfield’s rookie contract includes a fifth-year option, which keeps him under contract until 2022.

Cleveland hasn’t made a serious effort to re-sign Mayfield to a long-term contract, and Mayfield’s performance in 2021 — despite playing through several injuries — didn’t persuade the Browns to keep him into 2022.

Following Brown’s request for a trade, Cleveland said that it would not honour Mayfield’s request and would instead keep him on the roster. If the Browns hadn’t been able to sign Watson, there would have been a standoff between the team and Mayfield.

When the team agreed to acquire Watson, things altered. The Browns are expected to trade Mayfield now that they have a replacement lined up.

Mayfield has also stated that he wants to play for the Indianapolis Colts, who are looking for a new quarterback. The Seahawks, Saints, and Panthers could all be interested in a trade for the former first-round choice.
