Alex Carey is left-handed. Cricket Australia granted Carey a national contract in April 2018 for the 2018–19 campaign. His position as vice-captain of the Australia T20 team was announced on May 8, 2018. Alex Carey was selected in April 2019 for Australia’s World Cup of Cricket team.

Alex Carey played in each of the three ODIs of Australia’s 2020 tour of England while continuing to serve as the team’s ODI wicket-keeper. Carey’s first ODI century was made in the third ODI of the tour, on September 16, 2020.
Alex Carey became the second wicketkeeper to achieve a century in a Test match when he reached 100 in the Boxing Day Test against South Africa.
